marrickville festival and earthdance

Filed under: Events, General Stuff — schmadzie @ 9:34 am

sunday was a beautiful day for car free travelling. we headed off to marrickville after sol's morning sleep which meant a bit of a late start to the festivities. He hates wearing his helmet in the trailer and when he falls asleep his upper body ends up at right angles to his legs neither of which are so good when you are mixing it with the traffic.
On our way to the marrickville festival we passed earthdance which seemed heaps more popular this year than last. Hordes of people were getting off the train at st peters and heading to sydney park, it was so cool to feel the energy of the music and the enthusiasm to celebrate.
The marrickville festival was huge and its proximity to dulwich hill and the lack of enticing food allowed me to head up to the valley bakery where the lovely older couple prepared me some fresh spinach triangles at 3.30pm. Such generosity is one reason why i love that place, the food is mad too.
The bands were pretty cool although i think final acts rastawookie competently upstaged endorphin. Heading home i experienced the cooks river cycleway for the first time, i have done most of my riding on the road but parts of the cycleway were exellent, others not so but the ability to avoid main traffic is, to me, such a luxury. The one thing that put me off was smelling the kerosene heading past the airport, there is something about that smell that disturbs me, something like we shouldn't be able to smell it.
A fun sunday ended tired but content in the knowledge that being car free was manageable and not a disability like so many people tell me.
better do some work, totally overbooked.
enjoy the day

  1. the missus and I rode similar route on Sunday – but we decided to stay at Earthdance/Glo Cafe and then head back via alex canal

I like those comments about car free – I guess you just need to be organised – you really notice what dumb, dangerous things they are from the saddle – we saw a little dog get hit as well which turned our stomach

feel like selling the barina – put a big basket on the bike for the shopping instead

  2. baskets rock. i am hoping to build some load carrying bicycles in the next couple of years to get around the trouble of transporting bulky items. trailers are a sweet option and racks and panniers are put through extreme situations and survive(mostly).
How was earthdance? i thought the music sounded sweet.
car free is great, it means family time is constructed around transport a bit more than just the final destination but i think that is part of the joy of riding a bike. cars are seriously scary and people, especially stressed or cyclist hating people driving a car

  3. sounds were great for the most part – really enjoyed The Bird – and there was this great “plane crash” dj bunker on tha hill.

fun crowd – coopers long necks all round.

Also Glow cafe people are great people and nice to see them doing so much business

  4. is glow cafe the place just on the corner at st peters station? there used to be a cool bunch of hippies who did a mean tofu burger maybe 4 or 5 years ago.
coopers is the drink. a pale man myself, can’t handle too many reds but the vintage is the best beer i’ve had.
