Bromptons, Big Dummys and 3 Speeds..

Filed under: Events — nicholasb @ 10:08 am

Just a quick blog post from me (Nick) – a couple of cool links that I wanted to share:

  • If it seems likes we’re obsessed with Bromptons on the Cheeky blog at the moment, that’s because we are. We’ve even heard rumours of an electric assist hub motor Brompton being secretly assembled in the foothills of the Blue Mountains. Check out “Inventing the Perfect Folding Bicycle” – A recording of a talk by Andrew Ritchey, the bike’s inventor. I was working on one of these last night, and it reminded me how every piece of the design works together so elegantly. Best. 2-speed derailleurator. Ever.
  • We’ve got what will hopefully be the first of many Big Dummy’s built up in the shop at the moment. I I liked what the Surly blog had to say about cargo haulin’ pleasure -Big Dumb Love. If a Big Dummy is out of your league, do what I did and convert your boring, dust-gathering, fixie into a grocery getter of epic proportions..

Cheers!

Cheeky Picnic coming soon

Filed under: Events — schmadzie @ 3:25 pm

Sunday November 16 1pm till sundown.

Yep, a little earlier than last years, but still warm enough for a juump into the harbour.

It’s going to be awesome as usual. Vego food by Ruby Murrays (byo barby for the meateaters). Bike-blender cocktails and smoothies. Bike Polo. Everyone friendly alleycat/treasure hunt. Kid friendly bikepath cruise from Cheeky to Pyrmont via the water and the Fishmarkets. Solar powered boombox. And more..

Lee is thinking about a folding bike race.

Anyone got any ideas for other cool stuff we can do?

When I was recently jetsetting around the world with the lovely Jennifer and our Bromptons we came across the coolest bike shop in Sweden. It’s in the old town near the palace, really small with a bunch of beautiful schkeppshults, Bromptons and a Pedersen on the floor. All around the place was antique bits and bobs . And the best brooks display I’ve seen. I met Martin, who was tuning a 2 speed for the brompton worlds and he gave me a shop calendar with pics of old bikes on it . I think Martin came on the top 20.

Brompton Bling

Filed under: commuting — madbadleroybrown @ 9:08 pm

After taking a Brompton out for a spin on Ride to Work day, I can’t seem to get that bike out of my mind. There was something cheeky about the bike that made me feel like a teenager again (well we can all dream!). Then to make matters worse i found this flickr group. It looks like they are having fun over in Europe, customizing their bikes with the same passion and detail as the fixie scene.

here is one of my favorites:

One-eyed, one-horned, ridin’ purple people eater?

Filed under: Events — nicholasb @ 11:59 am

Check out Darren and his solar powered GPS enabled Townie – does it work with an iPhone though? Inquiring minds want to know!

Hi there Cheeky Transport,

I have temporarily laid down my Cross Check (with cheeky built wheels) and got on  a bike I never thought I would ride.  It is a big purple Electra Townie.

Yahoo! has this program running called Purple Pedals.  They built Townies up with a camera on the front and solar panels and a battery on the back.  While the bike is in motion it takes a photo about every minute and uploads it to an account on Flickr with GPS info attached. They have a few bikes on the east coast of the US, a few on the west coast, one in Copenhagen, one in Singapore, and two here in Sydney.  I happened to get one of the Sydney bikes. The second Sydney bike is unfortunately not working right now but will be online later this week.

Check out the whole program here (click on the bike when it all loads):

And you can see my photostream here:

and you can see loads more photos by looking for the ybike tag on flickr.

I’m not a pr person or anything, just a Sydney cyclist having fun on purple 20 kilo bike and I thought Cheeky Transport and the people who come by your web page might be interested in this project.  Take a look!

And PS, the wheels you guys built me are rock solid, thanks

-darren
